Merkki voidaan myöntää sodan- ja rauhanajan ansioista Suomen kansalaisille ja Suomen hyväksi tehdyn työn palkitsemiseksi ulkomaalaisille. Suomen Leijonan Ritarikunta perustettiin 1942 ja ritarikunnan nimi ja sen nauhan väri perustuvat Suomen vaakunaan. Kunniamerkit suunnitteli taiteilija Oskar Pihl. |
